I have a DELL Latitude 5590 Notebook with Debian 9 and kernel version 4.20.0 installed. Unfortunately the onboard sd card reader does not work.
The reader is following model:

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS525A PCI Express Card Reader
Cardreader

Output of lspci -v

01:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS525A PCI Express Card Reader (rev 01)

Capabilities: [b0] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting

Capabilities: [158] Latency Tolerance Reporting

Kernel driver in use: rtsx_pci
Kernel modules: rtsx_pci

According to https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/MISC_RTSX_PCI.html the needed driver is rtsx_pci.

If I check now with modprobe nothing happens:

root@sandbox:/dev# modprobe rtsx_pci
root@sandbox:/dev#

root@sandbox:/# ls /lib/modules/4.20.0/kernel/drivers/misc/cardreader/
rtsx_pci.ko rtsx_usb.ko

Heres the dmesg output: https://pastebin.com/raw/HQAX45b4

Unfortunately this is where I come to an end with my knowledge; how can I get that to work?

You're using an unsupported kernel version.

Actually, I have no idea how you installed kernel 4.19.7 at all. Whoever compiled it probably forgot or decided not to include the rtsx_pci driver.

The latest kernel available in stretch (Debian 9) is 4.18.0-0.bpo.3 (from stretch-backports). If you install this kernel version, you should be able to load the rtsx_pci module.

Source:

If you look at a list of files available in this package, you can see that it contains the line

/lib/modules/4.18.0-0.bpo.3-amd64/kernel/drivers/misc/cardreader/rtsx_pci.ko

share|improve this answer

  • I installed the 4.19.7 Kernel myself, but you're right - I forgot to add the rtsx_pci driver. Okay, in the case I would need to "extract" the source code for the driver, compile it and insert it with insmod right?
