มหานคร เป็นนครขนาดใหญ่[1] ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่แล้วมีประชากรมากกว่าห้าแสนคนในเขตนครและอย่างน้อยหนึ่งล้านคนในเขตปริมณฑล[2] เมืองใหญ่ที่อยู่ในเขตปริมณฑลแต่ไม่ได้เป็นแกนกลางของเขตนั้น โดยทั่วไปจะไม่นับว่าเป็นมหานคร แต่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของปริมณฑลนั้น
