Something happened during a kernel update that causes all my samba shares to have the executable bit set when mounted. I am surprised no one else seems to be reporting this problem. The last known kernel which worked was 4.10. I have just done a fresh install of Kubuntu 18.04.1 and the problem remains.
I have tried adding file_mode=0644 to my /etc/fstab mount and that removes the x flag, but it doesn't allow me to change it either. The proper Samba behavior in Linux is to allow these flags to be changed by the client and the changes will be reflected on the backend. The backend flags are just fine. It is the client flags that insist on having the x flag added.
Does anyone know what changed and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Scott

What OS are the clients using? How are they authenticating? What rights do they have to the shares?
